I have been playing squash since I was about 12 years old, starting when I went to visit my cousin in Bendigo and discovering he had started a new sport. Loving sport all my life, I jumped at the new opportunity and spent the whole two weeks of school holidays at the courts. Coming back home I quickly found my home courts and got involved in the junior program.
I spent the next 5 years quickly rising up the (admittedly limited) ranks of competition in Mildura, playing as a Div 1 number 1 by the time I left to Adelaide for University. Being a little overwhelmed by the big city, I took a 3 year break from the sport, before sitting watching the Tennis Australian Open one January and thinking to myself, "These guys spend a lot of time standing still, squash is so much more intense, I should start playing again!"
With that catalyst, I found the Adelaide Uni Squash Club representatives and joined. I also joined the Norwood Squash Club, where Con, the owner, made short work of me while deciding my rating for the Metro Pennant. It was about this time that I realised that I may not have been as good at the sport as I thought I was back in Mildura.
I was sitting at State 4 #4, steady over a season or two, Con managed to pick my level pretty accurately. Soon, however, a shoulder injury while playing saw me at the Physio, who suggested a coach to help with my technique. This is when I began with Mike Nash, who introduced me to the technical and tactical side of the game that I had previously neglected. I was warned that messing with my technique would likely see my playing abilty temporarily decrease, but combining doing my technique 'homework' with my now existent tactics saw me rise up (with no immediate drop-off) from State 4 #4 to State 2 #3 within two seasons.
Since then, I have taken over the mantle of President of the AU Squash Club, which I have now been since 2013. I am also the President of the newly founded Rackets & Strings Squash Club, a club for all players, student or otherwise, based out of the squash centre of the same name. As President, I have attended almost every weekly session as a de facto unofficial "coach", using my knowledge of the game to help beginners go from barely able to hit the ball to State-level competitors. I have now made my qualification official, having received my Club Development Coach accreditation in 2020.
As a player, I have continued my steady rise in ranking to see me currently playing as a Premier League #1, playing out of Rackets & Strings. I am learning every time I step on the court, which I expect to be the case until the last time I step on court.
